Overview

Aquarium of the Bay

Approximately 20,000 animals live in the Aquarium of the Bay, ranging from eight-foot native sevengill sharks and eels to rays and jellies, all of which can be found in the San Francisco Bay.
With a focus on education, conservation, and entertainment, it is the ONLY aquarium dedicated to the diverse marine life and distinctive ecosystems of the San Francisco Bay and its watershed.
Aquarium of the Bay provides an unmatched window to the Bay’s amazing marine life, and serves 600,000 visitors annually.

AQUARIUM OF THE BAY EXHIBITS

Discover the Bay

Discover the distinctive ecosystems that support marine life in the Bay Area, filled with colorful animals such as green Moray Ells, rockfish of varying colors, and the bright orange Garibaldi.

Under the Bay

Stroll through 300 feet of crystal clear tunnels featuring over 20,000 marine animals from San Francisco Bay and nearby waters. Check out mesmerizing moon jellies and Pacific Sea Nettle jellyfish, massive sea bass and rainbow-colored rockfish, four different species of juvenile sharks, and so much more!

Touch the Bay

Get up close and personal with the marine life at the interactive Bay Lab station. You can touch juvenile bat rays, skates, and even leopard sharks. In a separate area resembling the coastline, guests can touch sea stars, sea anemones, and sea cucumbers. Visitors can also participate in hands-on experiments led by trained naturalists in the PG&E Bay Lab. At 12:30pm daily, watch the aquarium staff feed the bat rays and skates!

Conservation Efforts

AQUARIUM OF THE BAY CONSERVATION EFFORTS

When it comes to conservation, it is important to walk the talk: Aquarium of the Bay was certified as a San Francisco Green Business in 2005 after being reviewed about recycling practices, hazardous waste removal, and water and energy consumption/conservation. The aquarium does it’s part by:

  • informing guests about endangered animals and habitats and what they can do to help
  • participating in ongoing research and breeding to stabilize endangered populations of ocean life
  • distributing the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s SEAFOOD WATCH guide
  • forming the SF Seafood Watch alliance with local businesses and restaurants to promote sustainable seafood sourcing
  • partnering with America’s Cup’s “Healthy Ocean Project” to educate about Marine Protected Areas and the effects of Marine Debris/Plastics
